A question about being "fiscally conservative and socially liberal"?We Answered:
You would call that George W. Bush. He is one of the most socially conservative people on the planet, almost frighteningly so. And, he spent like a drunken teenager before prom who had her daddy's credit card. I would say that is what you would call a social conservative/fiscal liberal.Tracy Said:
What do you call someone who's fiscally liberal and socially conservative? We Answered:
George W Bush's biggest fan.Depending on how far it goes, possibly authoritarian. A least a decade ago, I took one of those libertarian "smallest political quiz" with the diamond shape..there's a lot I know now I didn't know then. And yeah, it came out authoritarian. Nowadays it says I'm a libertarian near the top of the diamond, even though I'm not, hahah.
Alternatively, it could be some kind of religious Leftist. Someone who sides with Democrats on economics but holds to Christian social values. Someone who maybe wishes the Democrats were the pre-hippie party they used to be decades and decades ago before abortion and the like were even issues to debate. You know, some old Catholic Democrat maybe.
When I've encountered some of these people, some of them are the "Reagan Democrat" type who feel torn and sometimes go Republican..sometimes they're staunchly Democrat and heavily critical of right wing economics. I always wonder why no one calls such people "Theocrats", since it would fit at LEAST as well as anyone else. Maybe better than anyone else.
In any case, there are more people like you described than some would let on, although the "division" and being torn between parties usually means one will choose to go one way or the other, or perhaps even sacrifice some of their beliefs. I've seen some religious liberals who used to be socially conservative gradually become indistinguishable from secular leftists, sold out in every way.
Some have gone Republican over the last six plus years...not just passively, but with the intention of moving the GOP to a more big government platform. I perceived this in the 2004 election even as it was happening, and then finally a few years later people started talking about all these big government evangelicals who had jumped on board and demanded the GOP start hewing Left on poverty, the environment, etc. Huckabee sounded like that's who he was appealing to in '08. And the Christian youth magazine "Relevant"(God and Progressive culture, it says) seems to occupy a similar space. I mainly like the magazine because the interview people like Denzel Washington(claims a lady spoke over him when he was a child that he'd travel the world and speak to millions) and Jack White(says he wanted to go to Catholic seminary when he was a teen 'til he found out amps weren't welcome..though Tom Cruise wanted to do the same thing and look at him now, for whatever that's worth).
Anyway, those are some types of people that may fit your fiscally liberal/socially conservative profile. Were you just randomly curious, or do you think you/know someone else who fits that profile? Were you thinking of a non-religious person? Non-religious people occasionally might accept a moderate or even conservative position on a social issue, but almost none would be across the board conservative.

Why are people who are socially conservative and fiscally liberal so rare?We Answered:
The fiscally conservative can preach freedom from the standpoint of allowing people to keep the money that they traded their labor for with minimal government interference. The socially liberal can preach freedom for people to live their lives as they best see fit with minimal government interference.
If a message doesn't fit with at least one of these stances, if all somebody can preach is giving the government greater and greater control, it'll drive people away. Most people cherish their individual freedoms and don't want to relinquish that control if they can avoid it.

Are there any socially conservative and fiscally liberal people here?We Answered:
I think you can count most Catholics as socially Conservative and fiscally liberal. They oppose abortion, birth control, divorce, sex outside of marriage, any and all gay issues. They support School prayer and expanding religious expression into public life. They go pretty far to punish their own who step outside their dogma. At the same time they believe strongly in public aid to the poor, sick, disabled - especially children's programs. So much so they put their money where their mouth is with Catholic Social services - which does seek and use tax payer money when they can (e.g. faith-based initiatives). They believe in Public education (but would love to see vouchers to direct public money to their private schools). They generally believe in Environmental preservation and being better stewards of the planet than we are.
