Good Liberal Arts Colleges

Eva Said:

Are there any good liberal arts colleges in or near San Francisco?

We Answered:

There are not many.

Four are Dominican University in San Rafael, which is primarily a small undergraduate school, not a typical university; St. Mary's College in Moraga; Holy Names University in Oakland, which is primarily a small undergraduate school; and Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, which is also primarily a small undergraduate school.

The University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University, which is in Santa Clara, have larger graduate programs than the schools mentioned above, but provide an undergraduate experience which is similar enough to a a liberal arts college that you may want to consider them. Both of these are also Catholic schools.

Mills College in Oakland is a women's liberal arts college. My wife is an alumna, but I would not recommend it at this time due to the less than ideal surrounding neighborhood.

There is also Menlo College in Menlo Park, which is the only other non-Catholic school in the area which falls into the category. It is very strong in business, but does offer a psychology major.

Santa Clara, Mills, and St. Mary's probably have the best academic reputations.

1540 on the sat, good for some liberal arts colleges?

We Answered:

Your GPA is on the low side of most LACs. You should try to improve your SAT score to 1800+ to have a fair shot. For help on the SAT visit this forum: http://s215234424.onlinehome.us/index.ph… Good luck! :]

Mitchell Said:

what are good liberal arts colleges for Acting/theater?

We Answered:

Yes, a liberal arts colleges are generally where you would go to study theatre. Sarah Lawrence, on the East Coast, is a great liberal arts school. Others are:
Amherst College~MA
Pomona University~CA
Carleton~MN
Davidson~SC
Vassar~NY
Grinnell~IA
Oberlin~OH
Several of my friends, who are theatre girls, plan to apply here. Liberal arts colleges are nice, because you can explore different majors, and if for some reason you decide to change, it is very easy too.

Regina Said:

Are liberal arts colleges, like Pomona, good for neuroscience major?

We Answered:

I personally think a neuroscience major would be fantastic at Pomona College...actually, I'm going there on August the 22nd and it's one of the majors I'm considering on doing (the others being Bio or Mol Bio). Plus Pomona College (and really all liberal arts colleges in general) are WAY better in preparing students in going to medical schools (as I'm assuming you are probably heading towards...).
