History Of Liberalism

Sean Said:

what was the role of territorial expansion, liberalism, and race to the contours of the united States history ?

We Answered:

From Shmoop History

1. Territorial expansion - Western expansion specifically gave the nation more land, more wealth, more trading opportunities, and more resources. On the other hand, it created controversy about whether states should enter the union as pro slavery or free.

2. Liberalism - Increasingly, there were abolitionism forces in the North, sparked by religious and societal interests.

Ana Said:

who was the first liberal country or government in History?

We Answered:

Athens, the birthplace of Democracy. Everyone else at the time followed monarchical or dictatorial rule.

Rebecca Said:

True of False, America's history is one of Liberalism?

We Answered:

Liberal back then had a different social connotation than it does today, today it denotes a philosophy of progressive belief and equality across social, racial and economic classes in terms of rights and liberties. I would see how your book is using that term as it applies to the people you mentioned just to make sure you're using it correctly and drawing an accurate conclusion

Joshua Said:

Why many people generalize all Liberals?

We Answered:

It's Yahoo! Answers. Most people on here are uneducated.

Charlie Said:

In what era of our history did "liberalism" morph into socialism/communism?

We Answered:

I think most of it happened after the hippie years in the 60's.

Antiwar, free-love activists realized they were worthless just spewing their nonsense from a soapbox and decided to try and take over the government quietly by infiltrating one of the parties.

Since free-love and antiwar go so well with Democrats, their choice was clear.

Here we are 30-40 years later, and the environmentalist, immoral, anti-Church, love-everyone hippies have taken over the Democrats.

PS, they're still worthless.

Addition: Just Plain Jim, the preamble is a generalization. Nowhere does it say HOW the government should do these things. I say it can all be done by leaving me alone and letting me choose what I want to do to provide for myself.

Unfortunately, it is Liberal Judges who think like you who choose to interpret the Constitution on whatever whip pops into their brains that almost took our right to bear arms away. I guess you also think it only meant militia (ie, National Guard)?

Alfredo Said:

What are two examples of militaries throughout history that have gone against nationalism/liberalism?

We Answered:

nationalism is generally considered a conservative institution, so i don't know exactly what you mean. the Italian fascist and German Nazi militaries were vehemently opposed to liberalism, and vehemently supportive of nationalism. a military is a national institution, but armies like the French immediately after their revolution and the Russian communists immediately after theirs both served relatively internationalist, liberal ideologies.

but you want two that are neither? that's tough. your saving grace is that nationalism is a relatively recent invention. before about the eighteenth century, it was all about religion, ethnicity, or personal loyalty. so most any conservative army from a long time ago qualifies. two possible choices are the Muslims during Muhammad's life and the Rashidun Caliphate or the crusader armies who invaded Southern France, the Baltic Coast, and, most famously, the Middle East.
