Liberal Art Classes

Harold Said:

I just applied to a tech for nursing.. do I have to take liberal arts classes?

We Answered:

You should really go speak with a counselor if you are clueless. That is what they are there for, not Yahoo! Answers. Every college is different. At my tech, they have to complete their GE - or General Education - which does include classes like English and History.

Get a move on! This is your life, don't sit back and just "not know"... go to the right people to find out. There are usually plenty of admissions counselors ready to help you out. Call them and set up an appointment.

Vera Said:

I'm registering Touro College and want to make sure all liberal arts classes are transferable to any college?

We Answered:

The acceptance of the credits is up to the college to which they are to be transferred. Check with that college first. Colleges which accept transfers are interested in course content as well as in the accreditation of the original college. Some colleges have written agreements with certain other colleges about transfers. You can check with the dean's office at Touro to see if they have any agreements.

How important is liberal art classes to an engineer?

We Answered:

English and other writing intensive courses help you learn write more clearly and more concisely. This is pretty important if you want to advance in your career. The tough reality of engineering is that while you start out at a very high salary you basically stay at that salary (when adjusted for inflation) until you retire. That is unless you can take on a managerial role. You need to be a good writer and an effective, concise arguer. Many of those liberal arts classes help refine and enhance these skills.

Correct grammar is pretty important out there. Perhaps you should re-read your post. You might find that a little more coursework in that area might benefit you.

Logic and Philosophy will help you to create and identify valid arguments. A well-respected manager makes logical and valid arguments. He or she wins the support of his or her employees be giving well constructed tasks and defending his or her employees to the higher ups. Ones who use arguments like "Because I said so" usually aren't able to protect their departments effectively against cuts and restructuring that would negatively impact their employees. Business can be a very delicate thing.

Government and Economics are fairly important. Knowing a little about how your government works and how the economy functions can help you to make better decisions for your company. The same goes for Business courses.

From time to time you will have to sketch out ideas with your colleagues (Autocad and Labview aren't always there when you need them or as efficient as sketching out an idea on the fly). Art classes would be well advised.

Speech, Communications, and Theater courses will help prepare you for public speaking. Most people are lousy at it. If you can become a good public speaker you will be leaps and bounds ahead of many of your colleagues (hello, promotion!)

The average American will change careers 5 times (and that is careers not jobs). So it may not even be that you are an engineer your entire working life. So then you'd be well served by having a variety of coursework under your belt.

Instead of worrying about the fact that you must take these gen ed courses why not try to identify gen eds that will enhance your writing, speaking, and arguing abilities.

Rene Said:

could i get kicked out of college (art school) if i failed two liberal art classes?

We Answered:

First off talk to your teachers, see if you can pull your grade up to a D and drop the class with a withdrawal passing. and if this doesn't work you won't be booted out you will put on academic probation. But talk to you teachers first, they really aren't the mean evil people that they are made out to be. They went into teaching because they love education students (plus it will look bad on them if you fail their classes)
