Becky Said:

Careers in Liberal Arts?

We Answered:

Sorry, for most jobs a Liberal Arts degree is not worth the paper it is printed on, often being considered an easy option degree.

Ben Said:

what are some good careers in liberal arts?

We Answered:

web designer and graphic designer - they can lead to a creative director position which pays well. the starting job salary is not too low. you also get to work in a professional or informal environment.

architecture - the starting salary is decent, your roles and responsibilities can grow, and you get to do a lot of important projects like helping draft commercial buildings.

writer/editor - this ties with communications. you can use your creative writing skills for a feature story on the newspaper/magazine. the starting pay is not that great though, and you won't get paid well like the other jobs i mentioned above.

tv/video producer/anchor/videographer - very competitive. pays reasonably depending on the station you're working for.

radio show host - same as above

marketing - more business oriented. pays well (higher starting pay) and more growth oriented (you can become a marketing director and earn $$$.) there are several fields in marketing from creative services (which ties with graphic design,) market research (analyzing answers from a field questionnaire,) to writing product descriptions (web editor,) and strategy (telling the course of a marketing campaign.)

What are some careers associated with the liberal arts?

We Answered:

With a liberal arts degree, these days you can do almost anything.

**Go to law school
**Work at a financial services company (who are increasingly looking to diversity away from just business majors)
**Go to med school (if you took the core curriculum courses -- my friend was an English major who went to law school)
**Go into journalism
**Be a teacher or a professor if you get a PhD
**Get a government job
**Be an anthropologist / sociologist / psychologist / etc

As you can see, just about anything...

Good luck!

Terry Said:

What kinds of careers can you do with a liberal arts degree? And what exactly are "Liberal arts"?

We Answered:

With a liberal arts degree you can do almost anything! A liberal arts degree means that while you pick a major (history, accounting, biology, engineering, etc.) you will also broaden your knowledge beyond that single field. For instance, you will have to take some Literature, math, science, government, history, etc. if if those things are not your major. A liberal arts degree will also require a LOT of writing, reading, and critical analysis. It will teach you how to make connections between different fields and disciplines to solve problems. It should also include some public speaking. No matter how smart you are, it doesn't do any good if you can't communicate your knowledge to other people.

I have answered this question before, and you can probably find the more detailed and complete version in the archives somewhere. But the bottom line is a liberal arts degree teaches you to think and communicate, not just memorize. And since there are SO many fields you aren't even aware of when you go to college it is a fabulous way to try lots of things before you find what you really enjoy and are good at too. If you go to a small private residential liberal arts college (don't let the price tag scare you, very few actually pay the full amount when you add in financial aid!) you will get one of the best educational experiences ever and make both friends and connections that will last a lifetime.

Good luck!

Carla Said:

What is a liberal arts/career combination path?

We Answered:

I sort of cringe a little when I hear "liberal arts" and "career" in the same sentence. The purpose of a Vocational education is to train you for a career. The purpose of a Liberal Arts education is to train you to be thinking citizens of a complex modern democracy. (America)

That said, people with their BA in Liberal Arts often do very well: in Business, in Grad School, in Government and Politics. But, the goal of a BA in Liberal Arts is to teach you to think, to give you experience with a wide range of subjects (Classical Liberal Arts like: Mathematics, Writing, Music, Science and Speech... and modern subjects like Computers, Sociology and Anthropology), so that you can contribute to society throughout your career.

A Vocational education trains you for a job that is available now: maybe on a computer program, or engineering a specific piece of equipment... but often in 10-20 years that job is gone (to China, Malaysia, or just outdated... how many Typewriter Engineers have jobs today compared to 1920?). But, the benefits of a liberal arts education can last your whole lifetime.

Bessie Said:

What careers can I get with a bachelors in Liberal Arts?

We Answered:

If you hate intro to psych, then chances are you'll hate the rest of the curriculum. It's time to pick a new major.

Take some general classes to get a feel for what you like doing. If art is what you want to pursue, go talk to your counselor about your options.

Discuss It!
