Liberal Arts Colleges In Boston

Carrie Said:

Boston College Chances?

We Answered:

I think you are a shoo-in for BC. If you like BC and are interested in Chemistry, you should also consider Holy Cross which is just a half hour west of BC in Worcester. Like BC, it is also run by the Jesuits and HC is actually 20 years older than BC. Holy Cross is one of the nation's top producers of chemistry graduates certified by the American Chemical Society. Barron's Profiles of American Colleges lists Holy Cross in their highest "Most Competitive" category.

What colleges would help me become a humor columnist?

We Answered:

Well, you score points from me for KNOWING how to SPELL "sophomore!" *laughter*

A CS professor at Purdue University nearly 20 years ago, during a lecture, spelled it "softmore." *laughter*

Just write some poignant columns yourself! There are many places you can go online that will SAVE them for you to use as references should you ever need them. For example, go to www.townhall.com and post your stuff there. If you press the right buttons when you submit your columns, they will be made "public," and others associated with the web site will be able to read them and judge your work for themselves.

Bit of advice: learn to use the word "I" a LOT less, i.e. NEVER.

What Boston area college should I look into?

We Answered:

Boston University is a very respectable school and its in the heart of the city. They have plenty of majors to choose from including linguistics, sociology, and at least 10 different language majors. 30,000 total students. Very pricey at $50,000/yr.

Emmanuel College is a private school located in the Boston area. They offer sociology, english, and a spanish major. The only downside to it is the price (being private and all): about $40,000/yr.
www.emmanuel.edu

Northeastern University is one of my favorites in Boston. They offer linguistics, a selections of languages, sociology, etc. Its a bigger school at about 19,000+ total students but they have a wonderful selection of activities, sports, and classes. Its another expensive one though coming in around $46,000/yr.

Simmons College is another private school. They have a few language majors and sociology. Its also in the $40,000/yr range but with a much smaller size (5,000).
www.simmons.edu

Suffolk University is also private and has a student population of about 7,000. Again they have a good selection of foreign languages and offer a sociology major. About $40,000/yr.

University of MA: Boston is Boston's public university. Its about 14,000 students with a very urban campus. Offers a wide range of romance languages and sociology. Cost is much more affordable at about $18,000/yr.
www.umb.edu

Boston College is located about 15 minutes outside of Boston (basically a suburb of it). Has linguistics, romantic languages, and sociology. Student population is about 12,000 and the price is $50,000/yr.

I suggest UMass Boston for first choice not only because of cost but you'd also get a quality education. For private schools either Northeastern or Boston College...they have great reputations as well respected schools and have lots to offer any student. Good luck in your search :)
