Liberal Arts Degrees

Juan Said:

Do the vast majority of liberal arts majors go on to do masters degrees?

We Answered:

Most will typically continue on to something else. At my school we have a college of liberal arts and the majors within the college are things like foreign languages, sociology, government, history, psychology, ethnic studies, religious studies, etc. Lots of people will go on to get their masters or go to Law school.

Bessie Said:

are liberal arts degrees really not that great to get?

We Answered:

in general (and unless you excel in your field of studies or intended to pursue advanced liberal arts degrees in the master or PhD programs), it is true that liberal arts dont get paid well or tougher to get jobs, versus grads in accounting or engineering or medicine, etc.

however, at end of day, you do what your interests are and what make u happy, and there is no point to be a miserable medical doctor. therefore, u have to ask yourself what is more important to you.

Bernard Said:

Which liberal arts degrees offer good employment opportunities?

We Answered:

actually, not even the science and math fields. even they are in the same boat as the liberal arts (physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, etc).

what you're thinking of is the engineerings. now those offer jobs right off the bat, and the major is based around that subject area being your future career. those are the only majors like that.

a physics major may just as much be unemployed as an art history major.

Nicole Said:

Do medical schools ever accept students with liberal arts degrees?

We Answered:

The liberal arts include all the sciences, math, and computer science. About half the people who get into med school each year didn't major in a science at all. Other requirements include good volunteer/internship experience and great letters of recommendation.

Phillip Said:

Why are people so negative about liberal arts degrees?

We Answered:

Since the liberal arts include math, physics, economics, and computer science, it doesn't really make sense to be negative about some of the highest-paying fields. Although it also includes some of the lowest-paying fields. So either they're ignorant or generalizing.

Billie Said:

Are liberal arts degrees really very valuable-- especially in the current economy?

We Answered:

A liberal arts degree will qualify you to pay tuition for four years so you don't have to look for a job.
