Liberal Arts Education

Beatrice Said:

How was the study of the liberal arts connected to the concept of education, freedom, citizenship, and public?

We Answered:

A liberal arts college is one that believes that all students, regardless of major, need to have a solid grounding in all of the liberal arts subjects (in addition to their major) so that they are better prepared as critical thinkers and able to adapt to change.
These days we refer to all of the subjects within the humanities (languages, literature, art, music, theater, etc...), social sciences (economics, history, sociology, anthropology, political science, etc...), natural and physical sciences (physics, biology, chemistry, geology, etc...), and math.

Janice Said:

What are some advantages of liberal arts classes to an education?

We Answered:

You'll learn how to form an opinion. Think creatively. Look at things from a variety of perspectives (very important). Personally, I'm an ad writer & author with a liberal arts education and I think it helped me become strategic in my work, being able to effectively, creatively and persuasively market a product or service. Many designers can make something look nice, but it many times needs to more than that.

Hilda Said:

what is the purpose of a Liberal Arts Education?

We Answered:

To learn! Liberal arts majors are really more about education, knowlege and understanding.

Some people only want to learn technical things for a job. There is joy in learning just for the sake of learning.

Difference between industrial education and liberal arts education?

We Answered:

An industrial education (sometimes referred to as a technical or vocational education) focuses on learning the skills necessary to be prepared for employment. Examples would be an education in metalwork, woodwork etc. Essentially, the focus is on skills that would have immediate market value.

A liberal arts education refers to subjects that are often considered 'less practical'. Languages, literature, art, music, philosophy etc. Focus is much more on a wide and generalized education in the humanities, language and mathematics.

Phillip Said:

Whay kind of career can I get from a Liberal Arts education?

We Answered:

I have a liberal studies Bachelors degree. It was great because it gave me a good foundation of knowledge. I did continue onto my masters in education. So, technically you could go into education. You could go into anything... library media specialist etc...I think the liberal arts degree can be seen as fluff unless you further it by furthering your education through your masters and focus on something.
