Liberal Arts Major

Andy Said:

What can you do with a liberal arts major?

We Answered:

Flip burgers, teach liberal arts, custodian at a newspaper.

I think you would need a degree in journalism to get a REAL newspaper job.

Nancy Said:

If I want to major in liberal arts, what are the math classes that I must take in order to graduate?

We Answered:

Hi-you need to check to see if your lower ed math will transfer over. That can be achieved by talking to your current counselor at your HS, they may have some college prep courses already set up to be transferable. Set up an advisement session at the college or univesity you plan on attending and they can tell you what will transfer and what won't. Most places have what are called "academic roadmaps" that will give you your upper and lower division classes that you must take in order to complete your degree. Good for you for thinking ahead.

Gregory Said:

is it a good idea to major in liberal arts and also take the pre-medicine curriculum?

We Answered:

I wanted to do the same thing (I am a psychology major, and hold an undergraduates wanted to do a phd in medicine, or try working in the field of neuroscience/neurosurgery), but I don't really know much about it.
The best advice I can give is to contact the school you are interested in directly and ask questions. Email could be the best form of correspondence. That way you hear (and additional requirements) from them directly.

Hope this helps.

Billie Said:

does the University of Pittsburgh offer a liberal arts major/program?

We Answered:

Some colleges have majors called liberal arts, but they do not concentrate enough in any one field to be very popular, so they are not frequently offered. The various humanities majors make up the large field of liberal arts. See if you can find at Pitt a humanities major which you like and which will lead to a good career path with or without graduate school.

Clyde Said:

How can the talents of people who major in liberal arts best be utilized?

We Answered:

I was a history major, but also took a lot of English literature courses.

Despite what many people think about Liberal Arts degrees, much of the work requires analysis. I work in computers today and have been with the same company I love for nearly 20 years.

I brought with me to the corporate world my ability to research, to look for solutions outside the box, the ability to communicate well, excellent time management, excellent creativity for problem-solving, an eye for detail, and a nimble-ness of mind that has stood in me in great stead so that I was able to move into many different roles and found it relatively easy to multitask.

Most colleges still require core classes, so I was required to take some math and science courses for my undergraduate degree.

Jamie Said:

what careers can i get with a major in liberal arts?

We Answered:

Yeah. Just do some internships and find out what you like. Keep working through college. Liberal arts majors do have a harder time finding jobs. I majored in Economics and don't have a good job. I could get a master's in teaching but that's sort of a big commitment at this point. But one of my relatives with a film degree got a decent job through a temp agency and now he works in accounting with a major company. You could major in liberal arts and then major in something like accounting just for a backup. Or maybe a prehealth (med, dental, pharm) backup. Having a lot of options is a good thing.
