Liberal Arts Majors

Elmer Said:

Should i take Precalculus or Math for Liberal Arts majors?

We Answered:

I am not really sure what you mean by precalculus and math. If you think you may change your major to a more science driven subject, then I would suggest that you make sure you have a solid algebra and trigonometry background, as these are usually the prerequisites for calculus I. At most universities even biology and business majors need to take at least calc I ( often calculus II and statistics are also required).

I recommend taking a course in college algebra, trigonometry if you can find it, and then calculus I. If it does not interfere with your current major you might even take calculus II and statistics. Save physics, engineering, chemistry, actuarial science, etc., this will likely prepare you for most any major.

Also, check with your University. They do employ people whose job it is to answer questions just like this one =] Someone should be able to provide you with the course requirements (i.e., in print) for every major they offer. You may even find them online.

Salut

Why do so many people think liberal arts majors are worthless?

We Answered:

You're absolute right!! Liberal Arts majors are not worthless by a longshot. Granted they might not be the most popular right now, but their value is definitely related to today's world.

For example, having a history degree by itself won't qualify you to work in business, but that doesn't mean you can't take some business classes on top of your history. Why would a business hire someone with that history degree? Because it demonstrates an ability to research events and put things into perspective, which both valuable business skills!

Perfect example, I had earned my B.A. in Economics from the liberal arts college instead of the business school because I wanted to add more liberal arts classes to my background. In fact, I was the ONLY one in my anatomy and phisolophy class who wasn't a nursing or pre-med major.

But I can tell you that having had classes in areas like philosophy, psychology, sociology, anatomy, and art history has made me a better person. Plus it has helped me succeed in thw business world because it has given me a different way of looking at things. And a perspective often overlooked or even ignored by those without that liberal arts background.

And FYI, with a psychology degree, many of these people wind-up working in human resources because they have training in the "reading of people."

Bottom-line, liberal arts majors might not be the most popular right now, but the value of taking liberal arts classes is definitely worth it!

What do General Studies and Liberal Arts majors end up doing as a profession? ?

We Answered:

Graduates of Liberal Arts and General Studies major usually end up as University professors or instructors. I doubt leading companies such as Microsoft, Nokia, and other multinational companies would hire BA Comparative Literature or BA Creative Writing students.

If you don't want to go in the field of Social Sciences. BS Psychology degree can lead Medicine, or BA Psychology leads to Law. BS Geography is similar to BS Geodetic Engineering. Statistical firms, like Nielsen hire Statistics majors, of course. Biology, Chemistry or Physics and other Pure science graduates can also be a professor. But good determination makes them Medicine students and also posts the best jobs everywhere.

Try to ask a counselor and she may be give you the best advice for you. Good luck.

What jobs are out there for liberal arts majors?

We Answered:

I got a liberal arts degree and worked in a bookstore for 5 years. I did love it...
Then I went back and got a degree teaching ESL. I'm still a slacker. Maybe I should go to law school next.
