For 42(base 5) x 43(base 50) I got 4011(base 5)
What I do is I covert everything to normal base 10, then do the math, and finally covert back to whatever specific base is required.

(4x5)+(2x1)=22 ---> this is 42(base 5) converted to base 10.
(4x5)+(3x1)=23 ---> 43(base 5) converted to base 10
22x23=506 506 converted to base 5 = 4011 base 5

Sounds like you have Prof. Mattek? If so this is different from what she was teaching. I do not understand her at all.
