Liberal Arts School

Brandy Said:

Should I apply to a small private liberal arts school or a large public university?

We Answered:

If you don't know what you want to do, universities will offer a wider range of courses and majors than liberal arts colleges. Liberal arts colleges do have many advantages, like smaller class sizes and people graduate from their faster on average because their classes aren't all wait-listed, and they get more personalized attention from professors, but if you don't have a particular major in mind and want things like nursing and accounting to be an option, go with a university.

Linda Said:

What is the difference between a Liberal Arts school and a Conservatory?

We Answered:

The liberal arts refer to all non-professional majors - like English, history, languages, art, music, theater, science, math, and social sciences. Conservatories offer only subjects like art, music, and theater. Most universities offer the broader liberal arts, and that also means the degrees they grant can be used for more than just art even if you major in art.

Lance Said:

Does anyone know of a top 30 liberal arts school that is known for social life and academics?

We Answered:

My alma mater has a great social scene (well I loved it) and academics were out of this world. It's Bucknell University - ranked 30th on the US News and World Report. Please be aware, it is in a very rural area so Greek life is huge and people are generally wealthier than the average college student.

Terry Said:

Which is better, attending a Liberal Arts College for Fashion Design or attending an arts school for the same?

We Answered:

Don't get a degree from an art school. It might be good for fashion design, but most people who get that degree don't get a job in the field and a degree from an art school isn't worth nearly as much as one from a liberal arts school or university for most jobs.

Glen Said:

What is a liberal arts school?

We Answered:

Most "universities" have different "colleges" - including Engineering, Business, Education and other specialties, as well as the basic fields of learning - languages, mathemaatics, social studies, history, literature, etc. Some institutions of higher learning just teach the traditional fields and don't try to hire enough professors to grant degrees in all fields. Check Google to learn what some people call "liberal arts." Most colleges require a certain "core" set of classes you have to take, which are mostly what most of us think of as liberal arts. Many "colleges" want to Grow Up to become universities, but others are content to teach only their traditional topics. All of them give degrees, though.
