Clayton Said:

Do any liberal Christian churches believe in full immersion baptism?

We Answered:

My church believes in full immersion nude baptism. The earliest Christians would have done it this way.

Kirk Said:

Atheists, pagans, etc. who were once Christians: Did any of you come from moderate/liberal Christian churches?

We Answered:

I was raised Roman Catholic and went to Catholic school through 5th grade. My father's side of the family was United Church of Christ.

I wasn't escaping any hardcore fundamentalism. I just didn't have any connection to Christianity's perception of the divine, and I totally disagreed on the Church's stance on sexuality, birth control, homosexuality, etc.

Earl Said:

what is a liberal christian and a liberal christian church?

We Answered:

A "liberal" Christian would be one that actually followed the teachings and mandates of Jesus (instead of just talking about how wonderful he is). You know the mandates: love your neighbor, do good to your enemies, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, bring good news to the poor, etc. A liberal Christian considers social justice to be the mission of every Christian. This means not only helping the poor and helpless but changing the institutions that keep them oppressed. There's a verse in Matthew 7 in which Jesus says, "Not everyone who cries out to me 'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do my father's will." The Father's will is clearly that "justice flow like a running stream".

Often liberality is not a matter of denomination but of the members. In the Catholic faith, the "Just Faith" movement is pretty liberal (as are the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Catholic Relief Services, in their own ways). The Evangelical Lutheran Church is more liberal than the Missouri Synod. The Society of Friends (Quakers) is often quite liberal, as are Unitarians and United Methodist-United Church of Christ churches. American Baptist churches are often liberal. (Southern Baptists are not.)
