I'm sure social scientists have more sophisticated ways of judging this, but there is an interesting test you can do online, called the Political Compass (see link below). It rates you on two dimensions, "left" vs. "right" with respect to economics, and "authoritarian" vs. "libertarian" with respect to social factors. This lets you distinguish between, say, a traditional Republican who wants to get government out of people's lives, and a Christian Fundamentalist Republican who wants to have public schools teach their moral views. Both are "conservative" in some sense, but they would fall in very different places on the authoritarian vs. libertarian axis.
