alot of idiots on here trying to answer this question, so ignore them. There were many liberal democrats before 1964, like FDR, and Woodrow WIlson.before the 1900s just about everyone was "conservative" and then the progressive movement started in the early 1900s with Teddy R, WIlson, FDR being the most notable ones, at first they started in the republican party but was banned so they joined the democratic party. since then its been mostly conservative republicans and liberal democrats with some exceptions for regions liek you see today with more northern republicans being moderate and more southern democrats also being moderate.

I'd like to point out that our income tax DOES NOT PAY FOR THE ROADS WE DRIVE ON. Our income tax pays for zilch for us. Our income tax is spent on the deficit. Gas tax pays for our roads. Property taxes pays for our schools...etc...Should folks who gripe about us saying merry Christmas be allowed their Christmas vacation with pay? It's all the same. They'll complain all the way to the bank.
