True "economic liberalism" believes in free markets with minimal control or intererence by the government. The dems generally stray from that philosophy due their reliance on unions and workers, who are against "Free Trade." Notably, Clinton was an "economic liberalism" Prez via his belief in free trade pacts.
There isn't always much of a difference between Repubs and Dems in this area, except as current political considerations warrant.

Both parties' leadership is more liberal than their voters.
Among elected party "officials" Democrats are monolithic and it is literally impossible to be on their left. Almost none of their voters are on their side on just about any issue so I honestly don't see how they could ever win an election if people were better informed.
Republicans range from originalist to nearly as liberal as the DNC leadership and the elected Republicans reflect that.
For the 2 major parties your options are basically "extreme left" and "everyone else" since even 95% agreement with the DNC leadership gets you thrown out of the DNC but NOT out of the RNC.
Example: Majorities of Democrat voters, Republican voters and elected Republicans would not allow foreign nationals to remain in this country illegally and without documentation but all elected Democrats disagree.

Much has changed in the last century politically, we have see terms skewed and the introduction of progressive ism injected into our two major parties. We have see legislation that supported the central bank concept become law and socialistic programs that have wreaked havoc on our economy. Terminology is only good in relation to the conditions and time it is used. The only term that should have our attention today is progressive. This movement, hidden deep within both parties for years has come forth with a vengeance on our society and economy. We have liberals, conservatives and then the progressive libs and cons. There is a difference between a progressive lib and a lib. A lib is an American that supports the Constitution, the progressive wishes for the demise of the country for control.
Progressives are the gravest danger to our economy and society than any external enemy has ever posed in our existence as a country. The problem, we recognize an enemy from without and rally, putting our differences aside for our common good, but have trouble recognizing the enemy from within that separates us and keeps us at sword's point with each other. Divide and conquer. It seems to be working quite well for them and many still have not seen the dangers posed from within.

When and if the Tea Party movement pushes the country further and faster over the cliff, it could strengthen the resolve and conviction of those who believe in higher taxation, greater government involvement, etc.

Of course, Conservatives will then deny that their movement was responsible for any adverse affects. However, if enough people are honest and can clearly see Cause A and Result B, Conservative denialism will also fail.
