Why are the Conservatives giving in to Liberal Policies ?

We Answered:

Most conservatives are not giving into liberal policies, although some moderates who call themselves conservatives have given in to some liberal policies. You have what they call "Republicans In Name Only" or RINOS, who are possibly left-leaning and accept some ideas that liberals put forth. Many conservatives are now libertarians, who stand up for personal responsibility, less government, less taxes, and the Constitution, all of which are traditional conservative ideas.

President Bush has to make some compromises with the Democratic Congress just as how Bill Clinton had to compromise with his Republican-dominated Congress. I don't see compromising as giving in, but compromising often shows a sign of strength and having good communication skills.

Please compare and contrast Small government and Large Government Policies?

We Answered:

First of all, when we speak of things such as "small government" and "large government" we have to first recognize that this is a matter of the sum total of a large number of government capabilities and programs. Therefore it's a bit tricky to speak in general about this topic, as proponents of either are likely to have their own pet government programs.

A proponent of small(er) government is likely to hold the belief that, in general:

- small government means less taxation, which equals more room for the individual to shape his or her future and for companies to expand (since they don't have to give up as much in taxes as under a large(r) government), which in the end is beneficial to society as a whole,
- since government is typically seen as inefficient at managing the moneys allocated to it, individuals and companies make more efficient sure of such resources (this is seen as an example of where people are more careful about how they spend their own money as compared to someoneelse's money),
- although many government programs and capabilities (such as law enforcement, courts, military, fire departments, etc.) are essential, there are many things that government does that is not as good investments of the tax dollars; at some point we have to say 'no' to a further expansion of government.

A proponent of large(r) government is likely to point to:

- things such as "social justice"/"social equality" as a reason why government programs such as various forms of welfare are justified,
- redistribution of income/wealth as a benefit to society as a whole; rather than to allow the upper classes (however those is defined) to keep too much of their income, it is better to have a progressive tax system where a large part of their income is redistributed through government programs to those less fortunate (various forms of subsidies etc.).

Although a proponent of large(r) government may agree with the proponent of small(er) government that there is a point beyond which government should not expand, they may disagree about where that point is.

Stephanie Said:

Isn't the present fiscal crisis in the big blue states proof of the absurdity of liberal politics?

We Answered:

And Arizona, and Utah, and Alabama...

Some would say that this signifies the demise of the American experiment with capitalism, but you people just love playing your little party games, don't you... in the rest of the world we are experiencing a little of what our German friends call Schadenfreude.

Discuss It!
