Liberal Studies Degrees

Brad Said:

What are the benefits of liberal studies degree?

We Answered:

I have a liberal studies degree because I wanted to focus more or being a generalist with plans to get a law degree in the near future. Most people with liberal studies work in administration or writing. Ben Franklin believed that everyone should get their bachelor's in liberal studies and study a narrow discipline at the master's level. There are a few institutions that use this approach to schooling. I got it to use as a launching platform.

How Can I Become A Speech Pathologist With A Liberal Studies Degree?

We Answered:

There are many people who do not major in communication disorders, and then go on to study speech-language pathology in graduate school. Each program is different in their requirements for admission. The majority of graduate programs require that you take at least some pre-requisite coursework in communication disorders before beginning coursework at the graduate level. Some programs want you to take pre-requisites before applying, while others will let you apply and be admitted to the program before taking the pre-req coursework, but require that the pre-reqs are completed before you can begin graduate level courses. To make things even more complicated, different schools often require that different pre-requisite courses are completed before you start in their grad program. The pre-requisite coursework is usually somewhere between 7-10 classes, and generally takes 1-1.5 years (full-time) to complete. Since each program is so different, the best thing you can do is to contact a few programs that interest you and figure out whether they accept non-majors, and what their procedure is for admittance.

So, the short answer is that you can become a speech-pathologist with a liberal studies degree if you take some additional pre-req coursework. Unfortunately, though, admissions to master's programs in SLP is very competitive. Most graduate programs require that you have at least a 3.0 for you to even submit an application, and even if you have a 3.0 exactly, it will be difficult to gain admission because many students apply with much higher GPAs.

If you complete the pre-req coursework before you apply and get all (or nearly all) A's, there may be a program willing to place less emphasis on your undergrad GPA. You also may want to re-take some of the courses that you did not do well in and try to get A's in them. If you can get another bachelor's in Communication Disorders and do well, that would be ideal, but obviously a lot more work. I think your best bet would be to get in touch with some of the programs you are interested in, let them know your situation, and ask if there is anything you can do, short of completing another degree, to make you a more competitive applicant.

Ramona Said:

What job can you get with a liberal studies degree?

We Answered:

You need a degree in social work or something similar for what you are wanting to do. A degree in liberal studies basically is a degree for someone who really couldn't decide what they wanted to major in.

Kristina Said:

If you want to be an unemployed actor, a speed bump, or basically a homeless advocate, then Liberal Studies is for you.

At least go for "General Studies."
