Liberal Studies Major
Teresa Said:
liberal studies major in cal states which is best?We Answered:
For your major, it doesn't really matter academically. A liberal arts degree is what you make of it and what kinds of relationships you make with your peers and professors. I would choose a school based on which one you like overall. Cal Poly Pomona is a bit more selective, more residential, and more intimate, prettier and less commuter than CSU Long Beach. It's also closer to the cultural offerings of Los Angeles and the Claremont Colleges. LB on the other hand has Div 1 sports. Which of these criteria is more important to you?Gerald Said:
Is liberal studies considered an "easy" major? We Answered:
If you want to be a teacher, then you have to major in Education. Majoring in Liberal Arts/Liberal Studies/General Studies isn't even an option for your desired career goal.I can't speak for other universities or other countries, but at my university in Ontario, Canada the Education program is far from easy. They have high standards, limited enrolment, and a ton of their students end up leaving the program because they can't keep up (mostly with the infamous required "Child And Youth Studies" courses they have to undergo, which sound easy but are hell so I'm told.)
The Liberal Arts/Lib Studies/General major is easy, generally speaking. It's an undirected smattering of courses, so it doesn't require you to get into the difficult advanced topics of any particular area of study. It's also not very useful in the working world because knowing a lot about one subject means that you are at least qualified to work in that one thing, whereas a Liberal Arts major will not have gained deep knowledge of anything, and will probably end up working in sales or some mostly insignificant desk job.

what exactly is a liberal studies major? We Answered:
Not much. Not even teach - you need to be an education major for that. This is a major for people who just want a degree but don't really know what they want to do.Jesse Said:
Is Santa Clara University a good school to attend for a Liberal Studies Major? We Answered:
I live nearby. It has an excellent reputation in the various components of liberal studies.May I suggest that you consider what you plan to do with a liberal studies major after you graduate. This field leads directly to few jobs, if any. Good luck.

I was a liberal studies major and now I want to switch to medical.?We Answered:
The real question here is, since you have avoided taking technical courses like chemistry, physics and advanced math for years, why do you suddenly want to do a total switch and start on a career which is almost totally technical? The kids who you will be competing against mostly have been interested in medicine since they were in high school. They started taking chemistry - and taking chemistry seriously - when they were 15. Now you want to compete against them. It isnt so much that you CAN'T do it... the question is, why do you suddenly turn your back on all the things you have enjoyed and been interested in for years, to choose things that you never have been interested in. Did you get hit by a lightning bolt or something?I think you mainly have to look really carefully and decide what it is you are trying to do. Did you just watch too many episodes of "House"?
If you go ahead with this plan, you will not have to retake the non-science courses, but you will have to take all the science courses from the beginning in sequence... chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, physics, calculus, etc. and you will have to do well in them - you need a B+/A average in all of them and then a very good score in the MCATs....
Good luck (you're going to need it).
