We Answered:

It's actually because of geography and demographics.

I lived out in the country for most of my life, around hunters, fishermen, farmers and campers.

Even today and especially back then you couldn't really get reliable cable or satellite. You pretty much had two or three channels (the only televised news we had was local). Growing up if we wanted world news or even national news we generally had to turn on the radio.

Now, it is no secret the Conservatives have strongholds in rural areas like where I grew up.

The hunters, fishermen, campers and farmers are rural types, and other than the paper and radio their links to the world are few.

Liberal Talk Radio is unpopular not because it falls on its face, but because in rural communities Radio still holds a significant portion of the population who rely on it for their national and world news.

You're not going to make money selling tank tops to the Inuit. Know your customer base-that's key in business.

Now onto your second question, which is actually related to the first.

The issue as I pointed out above has nothing to do with content and all about the demographics of listeners.

Because Radio holds sway in Rural areas, Urban areas (which are largely Liberal, again-no secret there) has a Cable and Satellite Dominance. This means that Conservative channels will be few. However, it is wrong to say that Rural areas are 100% Conservative of that Urban areas are 100% Liberal.

Since there is only one major Conservative channel, it's natural that this channel is going to be what Conservatives all watch, therefore-if there were only two channels, one Liberal and one Conservative, the Liberal one would actually have more viewers simply by demographics.

It has nothing to do with quality of content in either respect.

The reason Air America failed in the free market is because "Bush sucks" and "Bush lied" gets old pretty quick. Plus liberal ideas usually lose when actually reasoned out. Gay marriage, abortion on demand, terrorist coddling, gun control, higher taxes, general America hating, etc. is repulsive to most Americans and they don't want to hear it on the radio.

Just like a station that just runs burps and farts would fail, so did Air America. Liberal radio wasn't a wasteland for lefties before Franken and Co. signed on. o_O

I think the reason NPR is successful compared to others is that NPR, though clearly biased, is at least more informational and less commentary and ranting. They also have very interesting scientific and historical segments.

Air America and their ilk seemed to do nothing but rant against Republicans and conservatives, and that gets old even to liberals.

A steady diet of "We're right...their wrong, we're smart...they're stupid, we're good...they're evil" appeals only to those who only seek to affirm their own bias.

I listen to NPR a lot, as well as to Lou Dobbs and Bill O'Reilly because it brings balance to the issues and helps arrive at my own conclusion.

Why bother listening to it when you can support Huffington Post, The Daily KOS, moveon.org and hang out at the Democrat Underground for your hourly updates of daily smears and debunked lies?

Besides, we all know that they listen to conservative talk shows and watch FOX News. We hear enough about it, don't we?

There is a reason why "talk radio" and most "internet blogs" are overwhelmingly CONSERVATIVE dominated.

When given the chance to DEBATE and REFUTE.... it is ONLY the Conservative points of view (ie. the Truth) that can stand up to the scrutiny.

Liberal ranting is so easily SQUASHED that their "talk shows" are almost INSTANTLY out of things to say....
