The biggest difference between conservatives and liberals is the way they want to help people. Liberals want the aid to be direct, while conservatives believe if they bolster certain parts of the economy the benefits will "trickle down" to the rest of society. Neither one, of course, works well on it's own.

It's funny, but I don't like the implication that conservatives are just retards. Some of the most educated (and arrogant) people I have known were conservative. I don't see why the left deserves the bookish stereotype considering that more poor people vote Democrat than Republican and that Republicans won the college educated in the last election.

I'm not a Republican or a Democrat, but if I have to hear one more time how Al Gore is a genius, I'm going to puke.

EDIT: Erick nails it. :) Classical liberalism is, for all intents and purposes, libertarianism (laissez faire market liberalism) which the polar opposite to liberalism. Conservatism is deeply rooted in libertarianism, but allows for a legislation of morality in some cases.

This will be a fascinating display of mental acrobatics by the proponents of liberalism. I'm going to sit back and watch... initially.

Since the liberal, or Rockefeller, wing of the Republican party basically squashed the conservative, or Goldwater, wing; and the radical left of the 1960's became socially acceptable and their illiberal views swept under the rug of the Democratic party, the terms don't make much sense any more. They're decent names but weighed down with so much associated disinformation, it would be best just to do away with it all and start afresh.

I highly doubt it....the people that argue the most would run the fastest if bullets were to fly...Don't forget that they are really not that different after all. Some policy differences, but at the end of the day, they are all rich guys/gals in suits who love to argue.
