Liberation Theology In Latin America

Chester Said:

The primary function of religion is a social function: It's not what they say but what they do?

We Answered:

The Solidarity Movement in Poland shows religion as a catalyst for political change. We need religion to function as a force for the good of all people.

Marie Said:

Why isn't liberation theology more popular in the United States?

We Answered:

Yes, liberation theology is theology from the viewpoint of the economically poor and oppressed of the human community.

Liberation theology explores the relationship between Christian, specifically Roman Catholic, theology and political activism, particularly in areas of social justice, poverty, and human rights.

Emphasis is placed on those parts of the Bible where Jesus' mission is described in terms of liberation, and as a bringer of justice.

In areas without a majority of economically poor and oppressed people like the United States, a liberation theology is not needed and is even eyed with suspicion.

With love in Christ.

Daisy Said:

R&S Jews & Christians, do any of you identify both "prophetic" and "priestly" views in the Bible?

We Answered:

That's what makes the bible a set of polemics to be considered, questions to be asked, and not an instruction manual. So my answer is it is both and neither. It depends upon the situation in the community being addressed. An Orthodox Jewish community might lean in favor the priestly point of view, while the Reform synagogues might lean towards a social justice point of view, depending upon the issue being addressed at any given time.

To me it's a poetic version of a socratic dialogue. Although it can provide some insight into who we've been, it's mostly good for helping us frame the questions about who we want to become.

Contemplating the paradox between the nasty bits and the good bits, the miraculous, incredulous bits with the realistic bits, the legalistic bits versus the idealistic bits, has inspired great art and literature and intellectual activity for 2000 years. Contemplating paradox usually does. This is why it's an activity so highly recommended by your average zen master on the street.
