Meaning Of Liberal

Howard Said:

When did liberal start meaning communist?

We Answered:

I am socially liberal, but conservative on fiscal matters, believe the constitution is the reason our country is great. Most liberals speak out on freedoms, they do not want the government controlling their lives, this hardly puts them under the definition of communists.
Its only because some people are unable to give any type of logical arguement to support their stances, so they have to resort to name calling

Earl Said:

When did the meaning of liberal change to mean SOCIALIST?

We Answered:

Under FDR. The socialists were not gaining ground as socialists, so beginning with FDR they moved into the Democrat party, which had been known as the liberal party, or "the working man's party" (compare that with "the people's party")..

I know the two words mean different things, but those who call themselves liberals are parading under that title because socialism is not popular here, or anywhere else.

Pauline Said:

Where is liberal tolerance when it comes to teenage witchcraft?

We Answered:

We're tolerant. That doesn't mean we can't snicker at a "born again" "dabbling" in it. Something inherently funny there.

Bob Said:

What´s the literal mean and pejorative meaning of Liberal?

We Answered:

By definition, a liberal is one who is open to the idea of progress or reform, often in the context of political matters.

In the specific context of American politics, "liberal" refers to someone who tends to be on the left side of the political spectrum. It doesn't at all mean communist or fascist, which are often the perjorative connotations that some conservatives imply when they use the word.
