Most Liberal Universities
Dwight Said:
Do you think most US colleges and universities are predominantly liberal? We Answered:
Professors have political orientations. Students do, or at least, they can. Universities do NOT, except of course in the sense of "liberal educations" and "liberal arts", which in fact refers to a multifaceted curriculum, not to politics. So your question is not relevant to the subject matter.
Incidentally, while the "locally controlled" public and private primary and secondary schools in the United States are regarded as completely substandard and are effectively the laughing stock of the entire world (we rank DEAD LAST in many academic categories, behind even rat holes like Bolivia!), our colleges and universities have always been regarded as the very, very best, and in terms of actual achievement, are the highest ranked on the planet, largely due to the fact that despite they are very open and allow a great deal of "sifting and winnowing" of ideas and theories, they have never practiced the sort of dogmatism advocated by the neo-Nazi right in the United States.
But they are not POLITICALLY liberal, nor are they CONSERVATIVE. As soon as a great educational institution itself has a fixed political identity, it ceases to be useful or quality. Even USC-Berkeley and the University of Wisconsin, whose student bodies tend to be left/radical, have very restrained ("conservative" but in an academic context unrelated to what you seem to be discussing!) academic standards.
As for instructors, speaking only for myself at the University of Wisconsin, most of my professors had very little political identity at all, and in my minor, political science, this was especially common. In the technical fields, most were quite high-button shoe conservatives politically, but often wild theoreticians in their own areas.
The stupid delusion that "those who can, DO, those who cannot TEACH" was never true, except perhaps at private grade schools in dumps like Mississippi and Alabama. Most of my instructors and professors had experience in the trenches of their fields, and were still at least peripherally active. Indeed, in publications, most of my graduate professors were heavily published, working authors.
That fools like the "three stooges" tell lies which indicate otherwise merely reflects the hard, cold fact that they have never had success in that environment, and are inherently incapable of even minimal education progress. They spew their madness from their prejudices, not from knowledge.
Educated people should emerge from universities with open minds, great knowledge, and very analytical. If they do not, the system has failed. In the United States, such failures are almost unheard of amongst graduates.
Warren Said:
What are the most liberal universities in the US that are relatively easy to get into?We Answered:
Very liberal schools that aren't super hard to get into include: The Evergreen State College, Eugene Lang College.Still quite liberal, but a bit harder to get into (but still not super hard): Hampshire College, U Vermont, Bennington College, US Santa Cruz, SUNY Purchase, and Prescott College.
You can look each school up on www.collegeboard.com to see how your SATs compare to their averages, to see how close a fit each one is to you.
Melinda Said:
Why do employers specifically seek people who have been the most indoctrinated by liberal universities? We Answered:
sane, intelligent minds are needed to get us out of this Republican Recession.Gabriel Said:
Why are most universities liberal? We Answered:
those who can, do. those who cannot, teach. while i don't necessarily believe that famous quotation, i do believe it underlies your answer. teachers are not valued in this country. look at how low their pay is for how important their job is. business people, on the other hand, make many multiples of this teacher pay to do something much more specific and less critical than educating our kids. in the end, it creates a support for liberalism from the teaching crowd, conservatism for the business crowd, as ideally the values of their contributions to society would be reversed.Frances Said:
What are the most conservative/liberal universities in America? We Answered:
In LA, Pepperdine is very conservative while Oxy is the polar opposite. Most schools affiliated with a religion are more on the conservative side, especially christian ones, and many liberal arts colleges are liberal (as you would imagine).
