Roy Said:

What is the Zapatista Army of National Liberation?

We Answered:

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, EZLN) is an armed revolutionary group based in Chiapas, one of the poorest states of Mexico. Their social base is mostly indigenous but they have supporters in urban areas as well as an international web of support. Their most visible voice, although not their leader, is Subcomandante Marcos (currently a.k.a. Delegate Zero in relation to the "Other Campaign"). Unlike the Zapatista comandantes, Subcomandante Marcos is not an indigenous Mayan.

The group takes its name from the Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata; they see themselves as his ideological heirs, and heirs to five hundred years of indigenous resistance against imperialism.

Some consider the Zapatista movement the first "post-modern" revolution: an armed, yet non-violent (despite an uprising in the early 1990s) revolutionary group that incorporates modern technologies like satellite telephones and the internet as a way to obtain domestic and foreign support. They consider themselves part of the wider alter-globalization, anti-neoliberalism social movement

Is the EZLN (Zapatista Army of National Liberation) Marxist, Communist, Anarchist, or what?

We Answered:

A lot of people want to say that they are Marxist, Communist, Anarchist, Socialist, etc. But I think, at least at the beginning, they were just a group of poor Mexicans who had become tired of the corruption in their country's government.

Zapatista Origins
The earliest roots of the Zapatista uprising can be traced to the Lacandon and the first encampment of the Emiliano Zapata Guerrilla Nucleus in late 1983 by a group of six men and women.7 Three were from Mexico City and of ladino heritage while the others were indigenous. These six maintained preconceived notions of the revolutionary process traceable to the teachings of Lenin, Mao and Che Guevara. This classic concept of revolution led by an elite few was the foundation for the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN), known as the Zapatistas. The early formation of the EZLN was convinced they possessed the proper authoritative ideology to force the communities towards socio-political change, and, eventually, destruction of the state apparatus. The ultimate goal was ........

information of volunteering with the EZLN-Zapatista army of national liberation?

We Answered:

Check out Witness for Peace, seems the most credible opportunity.

Elizabeth Said:

What are other groups, movements or campaigns similar to the Zapatista Army of National Liberation?

We Answered:

Well, it is basically modeled after Che Guevara's guerilla warfare operations in Cuba and Bolivia. They are in constant conflict with the out of control Peace and Justice paramilitary group. I am not aware of any other movements that parallel the Zapatista movement, but there are several groups seeking the same goal of agrarian reform, other militant groups with different agendas, etc. There are also other historical movements that parallel this one such as the Revolutionary Left Movement in Peru. Perhaps we are unaware of such groups simply because the EZLN has been so open to the media.
