This is a great question but the answer already given is highly inaccurate.

The ultimate goals of the National Liberation Front were the independence, peace, and neutrality of Vietnam.

The conflict was more than just the simplistic and very black-and-white "Communist-backed Viet Cong vs. Democracy-backed South Vietnamese Nationals."

The freedom of a "western capitalist democratic styled government" never existed in South Vietnam. The U.S. supported Ngo Dinh Diem's unpopular and undemocratic dictatorship, and several military dictatorships after Diem's assassination.

The NLF did not want "to eliminate the West," they wanted to eliminate the threat the U.S. neo-colonialist policy in South Vietnam posed to its people.

The abuses of the French colonialists were more than "perceived" - they were real.
