For all intents and purposes, they are. Real bona-fide liberals and actual dues-paying DNC card-carrying Democrats are virtually 100% the same people. In that very real way, Liberals and Democrats are indeed the same thing.

Liberal is not a party, it's a philosophy and style of governing. Most people who call themselves liberal are not. A high concentration of real liberals in mass media have painted unrealistic and very unflattering images of their opposition, so "regular" people think of themselves as liberal. Most people are too busy with real life to give politics much attention so most of what they "know" is from mass media, which tells them liberals are the good guys and everyone else are caricature-demons. People assume "I'm a good-guy, I must be a liberal," even though very few people really believe what real liberals believe.
Most people out here in the world are not part of any party either. They identify with one, but very few are actual members. If someone you know says they are a Democrat, that almost certainly means nothing more than their voting preference. As with liberals, very few people really believe what the actual Democrat party (known as the DNC) believes.
So, in a sense it's the same thing among regular people, too. Liberal and Democrat both mean "regular people who don't really fit the label but who think they do because they've been trained to think they'd be bad people otherwise."

Among politicians it's a little foggier. There are many liberal Republicans but also a lot of conservative ones. Democrats are all liberal. Even 95% agreement with liberal positions is not good enough for the party. Ask Joe Lieberman. So, in D.C., all liberals are not democrats but all democrats are liberal. That's pretty close to equating democrats and liberals, too.

So any way you look at it, they aren't EXACTLY the same thing but it's pretty close.

What a great story! Thank you for sharing that - the drive by media have their own agenda - and they love to villify our troops and Commander-in-Chief. So you have to find alternative sources to the mainstream media - the internet, talk radio, Fox News, Blogs, etc.
