A few questions on Homeschooling?

We Answered:

u can also find some good related material on google as well

Olga Said:

Would it be too late do "unschool"?

We Answered:

beginning unschooling may incur a recovery time (when you don't want to do anything resembling work).
Ensure you really do know the college entrance requirements so you don't jeopardise your eligibility. Also consider education laws and implications for your parents (unless you are an emancipated minor or similar). Consider looking for Summerhill (AS Neill) philosophy schools that you may be better to attend (they are a form of deschooling, have a read about them).

Phillip Said:

I'm having an extremely hard time getting my mum to homeschool me, please help ?

We Answered:

I feel for you, sounds like you know what you want and no one is listening.
Your Mum is trapped in her believe ,don't fight with her, show her that you can stay calm and kind in this process.
Is there anyone in your area that does homeschooling ,a local group maybe? Have you got any relatives who might back you up?
Who might have a word with your Mum?
Instead of arguing with her, could you try and write a letter to her..explain to her that you don't want to fight with her, that you do respect her point but that you need her to respect you as well!
This is a hard time for you but even in these times are you learning :) ,natural ,life-learning.
See it as part of the process, visualise yourself homeschooling ,refuse to fight with your mum ,practice to be clear and unemotional about your intend to home school. Your Mum is scared for you,she can't help that,do try and see her point, allow her to feel the way she does, that does not mean that you have to change your plan about your dreams..
Maybe you can speak to some one in school, ask if you can give it a go for 1 or two terms ,and then prove yourself to them!
I wish you good luck and remember ,don't let crazy emotions rule the way you communicate!
With loving kindness from a homeschooling Mama

People assume that grades tell how intelligent you are, but of course they don't?

We Answered:

I completely agree with the passage. Grades don't really mean much. If you look at a lot of successful people out there, they were not A or even B students. You need street smarts and common sense to succeed. Intelligence is great, but there are lots of intelligent people who don't get very far in life. In addition, intelligent people don't always get good grades either. Look at Albert Einstein, he flunked math. And by the way, grades are not indicative of intelligence.

Billie Said:

I really want to be unschooled!?

We Answered:

Have you asked her to give it a trial period - say one month. Or maybe just one subject. If she doesn't think it's working out after a month, you agree to go back to whatever you've been doing. If it works (and she's worried that you'll start to slack off after that one month), ask for a two month extension AFTER the first month, then go for three (look - you'd already be at 6 months!)

OR...

you could SHOW her you can do it by just doing it. Find something you are interested in and start learning it. Keep with it for a few weeks and she may start to see that you can do it (although there are no guarantees, of course).

Jamie Said:

I have been looking into unschooling....?

We Answered:

The whole point is that you decide what you learn. If you feel that there's a hole in your education then you fill it, you don't have to love every subject, you can choose to study something you don't particularly enjoy because YOU want to.

Colleges don't frown on self-motivated students. As long as you've covered the material necessary to manage whatever course you want to take they'll be happy. In fact since you are rather likely to be applying for something you are interested in you'll probably have covered the prerequisites in more depth than public school students.
