Top Liberal Arts Colleges

Gabriel Said:

Which of the top Liberal Arts colleges in the U.S is usually considered to have the best philosophy program?

We Answered:

You're not interested in universities? If not, youre leaving out a great many important departments.

But if liberal arts colleges are what you want, I suggest that you look at Oberlin, Amherst, Reed, and Brandeis. (Brandeis is a university, but it's small and very focused on the liberal arts.)

If you do want universities, then you might find the site below of interest. The rankings concern graduate programs, but a university with an excellent graduate program is likely to offer an excellent undergraduate program as well.

Liberal Arts Colleges in the Northeast, Florida and California?

We Answered:

Flagler College is not very good.
The best liberal arts colleges in FL are Eckerd and New College of Florida, but neither of them are that good.
There are lots of great ones in CA: Pomona, Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Occidental are the best. Pepperdine is decent.
There are LOTS of great liberal arts schools in the Northeast...for journalism, you might want to look in to Emerson, George Washington U, NYU, Syracuse, American...

I don't think your scores are quite good enough to get you into the very top LAC in the Northeast. Williams and Amherst are as competitive as any Ivy league uni. Howver, that still leaves a lot of great schools for you to consider.

One of the problems here is that these schools are very quirky - each one has its own personality and flavor. Without being able to visit, it will be hard to know exactly what you are getting into. One thing I think you definitely have to do is get a map and look REALLY carefully at where the schools are located. Some of the schools on the US News list are in the middle of nowhere. Others are downtown in a city. What do you want? I would even get the addresses for the top 20 I was considering and use google Earth to take a look at what the neighborhood is like!

Check both the US News Liberal Arts list and also check the list of Regional Master's colleges. There are a lot of very good smaller schools on that list that might be exactly what you are looking for.

After 45 years in college education in the Northeast, here are some schools that I am prejudiced in favor of: Hamilton, Bates, Colby, Trinity Hartford, Franklin and Marshall, Hobart and William Smith, Stonehill, Wesleyan (CT), Wheaton (MA), Holy Cross, Providence, Conn. College.

And of course, if you could get in to Middlebury, Amherst or WIlliams, they are wonderful schools.

Some unis that you might consider are Colgate, Fordham, Tufts...

Do your homework. Good luck!!!!

Continuously St. Olaf College has been the top ranked program in the country for liberal arts students earning doctorates in the natural sciences (including medicine).
