Kenneth Said:

Is Marlboro College any good?

We Answered:

Princeton Review ratings are garbage. Do NOT trust them.

To be blunt, Marlboro is not in the same league as HYPSM. They only have ~40 faculty, and the offerings are very limited. On the other hand, Marlboro emphasizes an interdisciplinary education, and students mostly design their own curriculum. If this appeals to you, Marlboro may be a good match. I would suggest Sarah Lawrence, Bard, and Hampshire, all of which have excellent reputations. If you like Marlboro's location, Bowdoin, Bates, Colby, and Middlebury are also worth consideration.

I suggest that you get a copy of Loren Pope's "Colleges That Change Lives." It's an excellent book describing 40 or so lesser known liberal arts colleges that provide great educations. The Fiske Guide is also a good place to read about colleges.

Tracy Said:

Do you think I can get into the University of Michigan's Law School?

We Answered:

You will need a college GPA over 3.5 and LSAT over 165 at least, to guarantee admission to UM law you would need over a 3.8 college GPA and over a 170 LSAT.

Anything you did in high school, ACT and GPA, will not be considered for law school admissions.

So it is way to early to tell if you could get in UM law, get the best grades you can while in undergrad and spend a lot of time preparing for the LSAT.

Rejected from top pick?

We Answered:

First off, if your sis decides to reject UC Irvine and go to a community college instead for 2 years..in hoping to apply to UCLA again she can, and will have a much better chance in getting into UCLA. In california, transfer students have TOP priority. And if she reapplies to UCLA after going to a jc, UCLA WILL NOT know that she turned down UC Irvine. So if she is willing to go to a jc for 2 years then all the power to her. I would defintely have to say that her chances would be much much greater. Stay above a 3.5 if not higher. Hope this helps, good luck to her!

What is the reality of careers for liberal arts majors?

We Answered:

You will be at a disadvantage in the career world, but you can still get a good job if you have an assertive personable personality. There are jobs where they don't care what your degree is in, just as long as you have one. But there are many many jobs which require a more specific set of degrees, and you will be out in the cold with those.

Long story short everything will be more difficult but you are still better off with a 4 year degree in art history than no degree at all. Of course you will incur debt acquiring that degree, and you will use time which could have been used for other things.

On the opposite side of the spectrum you can major in medical or get a program management certification (combine program management with another major) or business applications / business intelligence and be guaranteed a job in a wide variety of sub-industries.

It makes more sense to major in what is needed than to be one of the millions of surplus liberal arts majors. But in the end follow your heart. Just ask yourself this: Do you really want to be at a disadvantage when hard times come around?
