What Is A Liberal Arts Degree
Mario Said:
Is a BS in Biology a liberal arts degree? We Answered:
You're looking at two things here; the traditional liberal arts subjects and the liberal arts model of higher education. They're related but not the same.Yes, biology is among the liberal arts as are all of the sciences and maths. A BS in Biology probably followed a traditional liberal arts model as well. So, you probably are looking at "a liberal arts degree" by all measures. There are essentially two types of degrees in the US, liberal arts and applied professional.
In a liberal arts degree you take courses in all sorts of subjects in addition to your major so that you become a "well rounded and educated" member of society. Typically, about half of the courses are "general education" and half are in your major or closely related.
In an applied professional program you take courses almost entirely in your field of study with few (if any) in any other subject. These tend to be very specific for preparing a very specific sort of professional.
Most degrees awarded in the United States follow the liberal arts model even if they are not in a field that is traditionally among the liberal arts. Very few people in the US graduate with a purely applied professional degree at the bachelor's level though there are many at the associates and certificate levels - notably the Associate of Applied Science. Most degrees above the bachelor's level follow an applied professional or academic research model with the exception of the Master of Liberal Arts and some graduate degrees in the classics.
If you have to take literature, composition, history, poli sci, social sciences, fine arts, math, and science at your college no matter what your major is - it's a Liberal Arts degree model.
Now, jobs to get with a BS in Biology. Unfortunately, most jobs for scientists require a graduate degree. Technicians and teachers can employ with bachelor's degree. For some ideas on what people do with a BS in Biology there's a nice list here --> http://condor.depaul.edu/~biology/ugrad/… many of those require some more education beyond the bachelor's degree.

I am getting my Liberal Arts: English and Humanities degree, Does this make me a loser? We Answered:
It was probably a bad choice if you want to go out and immediately get into a good paying job in some industry. Most employers just want you to have a degree though, no matter the subject. Go into Sales. You'll do okay.Morris Said:

What Do I need for a Liberal Arts Degree? We Answered:
It willl depend on where you earn the degree. Here's an example from a private college in California:

Here's another example from a public college in California (CSU system)

When you're exploring college websites, look for the information on undergraduate degrees (sometimes listed under "academics") and then find the liberal studies or liberal arts department page(s).
A liberal arts degree often leads into the elementary education field, but sometimes leads into business, the law and other professional fields. I myself have a degree in liberal arts (AA) and liberal studies (BA). I then continued to graduate school for an MLS and became a librarian. The pay doesn't suck at all.

What kind of job/career can I get with a degree in Liberal Arts?We Answered:
If you go for Liberal Arts, keep this in mind as you pursue your degree: think about how you will sell a potential employer someday on your knowledge acquired: your understanding of human nature, your awareness of history, sociology and economics as they relate to the global economy, your facility in languages (be sure to specialize in a second one if you don't already have that knowledge in your skills set)....In other words, think of "hard" skills that can be demonstrated with a "soft" (in the eyes of some employers) major.
And get a few business classes under your belt too when feasible. With this combination of broad knowledge and demonstrable skills, you'll be unstoppable.
(If your back's really to the wall down the road, tell the interviewer you chose liberal arts because at that time you were thinking pre-law, usually a perfectly acceptable strategy when pursuing a B.A.)
Best wishes to you.
