What Is Liberal Studies

Joseph Said:

What can I do with a bachelor's in Liberal Studies, minoring in Women's Studies & Sociology?

We Answered:

jobs do not necessarily follow from undergraduate liberal arts degrees. hopefully you have learned critical thinking and other skills which are going to help you in a professional area. maybe the job you should look for is one where your passions lie and where you have some talent. a ba does not give you much in the way of practical skills like accounting or writing business plans. it certainly is not like getting a technical certificate in aviation or nursing. so, if you like education and women's studies, search out employers and situation where you can acquire the technical expertise you will need in those areas. at this point in your career you need to develop a niche for yourself. certainly there are lots and lots of degreed barristas, waiters and office drones.
go for the gusto! you have proven that you have the staying power by getting the degree and a certain intellectual achievement, but that is merely the first step. good luck

Nelson Said:

What classes are necessary for a BA in Liberal Studies?

We Answered:

Most "Liberal Studies" don't have a set curriculum, rather allowing you to take a wide range of classes in arts and sciences and humanities. Usually 120 credits. (Most classes are 3 credits each, and most people average 12-15 credits a semester) The BA in Liberal Studies is a generalist's degree. Many people go to grad school (MBA, JD, Med School, etc), but many more just earn the degree and enter the work place. You can market yourself as learned in a wide range of topics, and that you can be a benefit to a corporation in many ways.

Interestingly (businessweek Magazine) Google hires mostly Computer Science graduates, (normal for such a business) and 2nd is Liberal Studies. (Normally a corporation will hire more business graduates, but Google prides itself on thinking employees)

Natalie Said:

What are my career options if I do an MBA after a BA in language or liberal studies?

We Answered:

You're right about the function of an MBA, but foggy on the target market for them. MBAs are for people who have already entered the business world, have accrued some years of experience, and need an additional qualification to advance in the company.

In other words, if you haven't already started a business career, an MBA won't help you. In fact, it can actually hurt you in that situation since you would be academically overqualified for non-management/entry level positions, but lacking the necessary work experience to be hired for management/executive positions. For that reason, a lot of colleges/universities list 2-3 years of work experience as a requirement for admission to the MBA program.

Aspiring to a career in management is fine...but you'll have to find a way into the business world prior to going for an MBA.

Added:
I should also add that when a lot of companies plan on promoting someone internally to a management/executive position, they will send that person to do their MBA and cover all or part of the cost for them.

Olga Said:

Is Liberal Studies what you have to go in toe become a librarian?

We Answered:

No. To be a librarian, you need to get a 4-year college degree in something (it really doesn't matter what - do whatever you want) and then get a 2-year Master of Library Science degree. That's a total of 6 years of college. You don't need to get your 4-year degree and your masters at the same school, so go wherever you want for the first 4 years and then apply to Library school from there.
