Birth Of The Republican Party
Agnes Said:
Will George Bush be the man who brought down the Republican Party? We Answered:
Senator McCain is now saying Obama would lose a war to win an election. I am unfortunately not surprised to see the senator cave in to the GOP spin machine and use below the belt attack tactics. So much for his high ground platform. This is what I think, this administration powered by VP Cheney and fronted by President Bush, with the help of his many henchmen, Delay, Libby, Rumsfeld, Gonzales and Hastert to name a few have advanced the hidden agenda of the GOP at the expense of the country and its own base, and now they are once again pushing to elect another republican and the base will willingly believe their lies despite all they can see around them. Consolidation of power in the executive branch, making it almost impregnable. A tax cut which has been wiped out long ago just in the rise of the cost of gasoline. Did I mention the secret energy meetings? Growing the size of the federal government along with the national debt and trade deficits coupled with massive spending also seems to go unnoticed by many, many republicans. Fiscally responsible, no. Morally superior, not hardly. Accountable, no. Responsible, I can't recall. I sometimes wonder why republicans don't notice thier party is always being fought over for control by some faction or other that wants to legislate from their particular point of view all of which seem to include exclusion of some group of people or other. This administration has not only tarnished their party, they have tarnished our world image. A sad time for American history.Calvin Said:
A 3rd party birth out of the Republicans? We Answered:
I think Palin is making a play for the GOP, and Ron Paul supporters are trying to influence it as well (but you are right that they are also keeping an eye towards third party. We won't vote for neocons.) We are for liberty and fiscal responsibility and the Constitution. Most of us love family values but don't believe government belongs in that equation. That is on the Ron Paul side. Palin said something about 'God giving us this war' which might just have meant 'live with what we can't change' on the state front, but I don't know enough about her to say I'd support her. I kind of like her independent spirit, though.Audrey Said:
Has the birth of the tea party patriots now created a real tangible reason for Militias to become active? We Answered:
Good Point! That same thought came to mind as well. It might be to early to tell and a large part of the government to diffuse the efforts with better negotiations.Felicia Said:
what effect did the birth of the republican party have on abolishing slavery? We Answered:
The foundation of the Republican party provided the anti-slavery people a political group through which they could press for abolition. Before that time, there were factions of political parties that were anti-slave but there voice wasn't strong enough because their numbers were too spread out.Viola Said:
Birth of the republican party? We Answered:
The Republican Party name was christened in an editorial written by New York newspaper magnate Horace Greeley.Following the publication of the "Appeal of Independent Democrats" in major newspapers, spontaneous demonstrations occurred. In early 1854, the first proto-Republican Party meeting took place in Ripon, Wisconsin. On June 6, 1856 in Jackson, Michigan upwards of 10,000 people turned out for a mass meeting. This led to the first organizing convention in Pittsburgh on February 22, 1856.
On the floor of the Senate Democratic representatives Preston Brooks and Lawrence Keitt (South Carolina) brutally attacked Charles Sumner with a cane after Sumner gave a passionate anti-slavery speech. On the same day as the attack came the news of the armed attack in Lawrence, Kansas.
Horace Greeley was quick to decry both events as plots of the pro-slavery South. "Failing to silence the North by threats. . .the South now resorts to actual violence." The first rumblings of the Civil War had begun.
Ronnie Said:
How did the birth of the republican party lead to the Civil War?We Answered:
John C. Fremont, a would-be renowned war hero, was the first Republican to run for President. He ran with the slogan, "Free men, free soil, free labor." The Republican ideology of anti-slavery provoked the pro-slavery Democrats, and, well, we all know what that led to.Elsie Said:
The end of the Republican Party and birth of the Libertarian? We Answered:
