Republicans don't really want universal health care. Basically they believe that health care is for those who can afford it. Democrats want it, but not really.

The thing is, all our health care in the US today is run by a handful of enormous health insurance companies. They not only sell insurance, they own the hospitals and clinics, and the doctors work for them. They contribute millions to political campaigns every election year, so both parties work for them.

Money has become the most important thing in politics. So much so that we no longer have elections, we have -auctions-. Whichever candidate spends the most money wins about 95% of the time. And both parties get their money from the same places, so you can't expect their actual agendas to be that much different.

So far we have had four or five politicians put up plans for a universal health care system. None of these proposals involve cutting out the big insurance companies and their profits. GHW Bush had a plan, Bill Clinton had a plan, and then in the last election both Hillary and Obama talked about their own plans. Every one of these plans involved having the federal govt. buy insurance for (some) uninsured from the existing health insurance companies at their going rate. The plans all are not so much for universal health insurance as much as for govt. subsidies to the health insurance companies.

The GOP is in disarray at the moment and will only do what they can to obstruct Obama's plan. But in the past they have also advocated 'Health Care Savings Accounts', where people were allowed to put aside some money every month, before taxes, into a savings account in case they needed medical services. But how long would it take you to put away the $60,000-80,000 that a heart attack costs, or a hip replacement?
