The Federalist are like the Republicans in that they were the ones that made money and favoured those with money. They are like Democrats in that they were often more socially liberal and were often against slavery. The majority of them were in the northeast like Democrats today.

The republicans were like Republicans in that they were often socially conservative and some were slave-holders like Jefferson. They were also for a laissez-faire economy which is also like Republicans today. The majority of them were in the south which makes them like Republicans today. Even though they eventually became the Democratic party they seemed to have been the more conservative of the two by today's standards.

We Answered:

Traditionally the Democrats and Republicans really did stand for different things. But today they're not that much different. The problem is that we have allowed money to become just too important in our electoral politics. In an 'open' election, one with no incumbent running for re-election, the candidate who wins 95% of the time is the one who spent the most money. So our campaigns are really fund-raising contests, and our elections are really -auctions-. Since both parties desperately need money, and they both get the money from the same sources, you can't realistically expect their true agendas to be all that different.

You shouldn't listen to what politicians say but watch what they actually do. If you go by actions, not words, the parties look completely different. For the last 3 decades, every Republican president has run as a strict budget hawk, promising to make balancing the budget their top priority, but once in office they behave as if debt simply didn't matter. Democrats posture as being on the side of the working guy, but once in office they serve their corporate sponsors. Republicans promise smaller, cheaper government, but all end up swelling the ranks of government. They posture strong on 'law and order' but in office they never feel the laws actually apply to -them-.

As for Republicans not being able to tell you what they're for, that has to do with the current situation, having a Democratic president. When the Democrats win the White House, the Republicans go into a four year long hissy fit. Their top priority becomes to destroy the Democratic president. So they have to know where -he- stands before they can tell you their own position, which will always be 180 degrees opposite. Even when a Democratic president reverses himself completely, as Obama and Clinton occasionally did, the Republicans will still oppose him.

Whenever you have two nearly identical products in a marketplace, they spend all their time and effort and money trying to differentiate themselves from one another. This is true with political parties just as it is with laundry detergent.

Republicans say A - Democrats say opposite of A. That's why the US political system sucks, there are only two extremes presented.
