Democrat And Republican

Joe Said:

Are U a democrat or republican who opposes illegal immigration?

We Answered:

I'm a far-left Democrat and I oppose illegal immigration, amnesty, et. al. because the illegal aliens are being used by big agribusiness and other predatory employers to lower the cost of labor in the U.S. - I favor deporting both the aliens AND the employers...

Sharon Said:

What are the roots words of Democrat, Republican and Democracy?

We Answered:

Demos...democrat and democracy. From the Greek Demos=common people of a district. Kratos=rule, strength.

Publica...republic and republican. From French res publica=matters or things of the public. This however has Latin roots...poplicus=pertaining to people. This is the adjectival form from the original Latin word populus=people

Democracy was the government of the ancient Athenians after it was ruled by an olgarchy nd tyrants. All male citizens voted, made laws, and judged. These duties were performed regularly and in unison.

The Romans are responsible for the term and idea of the republic. They ousted King Tarquinius and accused him of being a tyrant. They eliminated the idea of monarchy. Leaders were then chosen by the male citizens.

Lucy Said:

Do you think that someone other than a Democrat Republican will ever be elected?

We Answered:

I don't expect it'll happen anytime soon, but don't rule it out, the American people don't like to be messed with, and if the the two parties can't get their act together anytime soon, we just might see an independent in the White House in our life time, who knows, I'm 63!

Ramona Said:

What do you think it means to be a Democrat/Republican, as opposed to a Liberal/Conservative?

We Answered:

Democrat or Republican (or nonpartisan) are the party designations that a voter is registered under. They may or may not adhere to the party's platform.

Liberal or Conservative mean whatever they mean to the people engaging in whatever they are discussing at the moment.

Cheryl Said:

How is the democrat/republican presidentail candidate determined?

We Answered:

At the end of all the primary voting there will be a convention for each party. It is at this convention the candidates will be selected. They are chosen by electoral votes. Each state has so many electoral votes base on population. The candidate who gets the most electoral votes will be the candidate for that party. It takes a certain number of votes to receive this nomination. Some time it works with popular vote and sometime it doesn't . Not a very scientific method but that's how it works
