The terms Liberal and Conservative are so badly abused that they should be banned from usage. Seriously. Historically the Democrats have always thought that spending money was a good notion while the Republicans felt that while giving money and tax breaks to the very rich was fine & dandy, that to do so for the middle class and poor was wrong. This notion is dubbed FISCAL CONSERVATISM.
Once upon a time, during the 1860's the Republicans were Social Liberals promoting causes such as ending Slavery and extending Civil Rights to minorities, assuming those minorities were 'black;' Once the Republicans realized that they might lose power by pursuing such notions they pulled back.
Throughout the 19th into the 20th Century Social Liberals began making a lot of noise from the outside and worked their way into both parties. Progressives snagged a big victory in 1900 when a bullet put a Progressive who defiantly wore the Republican label into the White House. AT this point in history the Democrats were still against Civil Rights and got real angry when Teddy Roosevelt invited an uppity N***** to dine with him in the White House.
Democrats scored an impressive victory against Liberalism when Progressive Roosevelt split the Republican Party by running as a Progressive (Bull Moose) against Republican Conservative Financially and Moderate Liberal Taft, giving outsider Woodrow WIlson a Democrat the Job of Chief Honcho. WIlson declared war against Blacks but was declared a Liberal because he wanted to give the US military Industries a healthy profit margin by fighting for Democracy in Europe. Financially WIlson was a true Democrat, spending wildly and freely and plunging America into debts easily erased by profiting from World War One thus proving he was a lucky f ....
By the 1920s the Republicans were the Party of Fiscal Conservatism: both Harding and Coolidge and then Hoover said that the US Gov was gonna spend as little as possible while allowing the private banking interests to run amok.
The resulting Crash of 1929 and Great Depression did not persuade Republicans that they were wrong and they were still worshiping Coolidge and Hoover decades down the road.
Promising Hope and an end to fear a truly LIBERAL Franklin Delano Roosevelt was swept into office which he held onto for more than a decade. FDR spent and spent and spent some more, Fiscal Conservatives decried that America was becoming a Socialist Quagmire.
FDR 's died and then America was faced with TRUMAN - - - - YIKES a man who was definitely defiantly a SOCIAL LIBERAL and a Fiscal CONSERVATIVE. The buck stops here. Spending was In with Truman, yes, but with control and intelligence something Democrats and Republicans hated.
Sothern Democrats were so angry with Truman that they Ran a truly old fashion Segregationist for President under the Dixiecrat Label in 1948 while the Republicans experimented with a MODERATE named Thomas Dewey. Truman beat them both and continued down a dangerous LIBERAL path, giving rights to all sorts of minorities including women.
America was 'rescued' by a moderate Republican Eisenhower who hated Truman so much that he adopted all of his policies and took all the credit which the Republicans found was a wonderful way to do business. Financially Eisenhower did not have to care all that much about spending since America was prosperous enough to ignore reality most of the time (except for the Edsel, launched during a recession it died).

In 1960 the Democrats suddenly found it fashionable to be Liberal; they felt they did not need certain Southern States, as long as they could snag Texas and one or two others, and so they became the party of Liberal Values. Spending was in, Fiscal Conservatism suspect, and so it remained for about twenty five to thirty years. When Sotherner Democrat but truly an Anarchist Lyndon Johnson pushed through a Social Liberal Agenda and financially said spend it all and take all we can and spend it too. Amidst anti War protests and cities burning Moderate Republican Nixon took office and shocked and angered everyone by continuing with Liberal and Moderate Policies whil continuing to spend as freely as his predecessor.

Democrats are pro-choice, anti-gun, and feel that big government has the answer, and big business is the problem. Democrats believe in man-made global warming, and feel Global warming is more of a threat then terrorism. The democrat solution to any problem is raising taxes. Democrats support labor unions and trial lawyers and hate Wal-Mart.

Republicans are Pro-Life, pro-gun, and think that big business is the solution and big government is the problem. Republicans believe global warming is a natural occurrence and not caused by human activity, and terrorism is more of a threat then Al Gore. The republican answer to any problem is cutting taxes. Republicans support real estate developers and the NRA, and love Wal-Mart.

You mean why did the Democrats drop the Republican part of their name? It was the other way around. Republicans are the decedents of Whigs which are the decedents of Federalists. During the time of Federalists, Democratic-Republicans were called Republicans for short.

generally most republicans have core values,deal with real world problems head on,dont make excuses for there failures,distingiush between feeling good decisions and ones that have real application without feelings getting in the way,.They dont believe in concensus,or which way the wind blows to make a decision.they believe in the right for anyone to be able to make it on there own...Democrats are not any of these things

The democratic republican party was started by jefferson and madison. At the time it competed against the federalist party, which favored a strong central govt while jefferson and madison supported states rights. the dem repubs went by either name until the civil war. at that time, the party split on views and was renamed democrats. the whig party was the other major party at that time. Lincoln led a smaller republican group to power and they challenged the democrats for control. the republican party got its name as a tribute to Jefferson. Ironically Jefferson's original party was for small fed govt but is now about big govt. The republicans support states rights.
