Vanessa Said:

What's the difference between a Republican and a Democrat?

We Answered:

Democrats are supposed to be defenders of the middle class and are supposed to be on the liberal(sane) side of social issues-Democrats supported desegregation, gay rights, and legal abortion.
Republicans are supposed to support America by being friendly to big business, who creates jobs for Americans. They are supposed to also limit the size of government and cut taxes. They are always on the religious(oppressive) side of nearly every social issue.

Beyond Republicans being socially conservative, and Democrats being socially liberal neither party really achieves what it's supposed to for the most part, which is probably why we are polarized and defined as "liberal/left" or "conservative/right", because we're all moderates on most issues, but our stances on social issues define our personalities and party affiliations.

Most of the expansions of governmental bureaus(and their creations) have occured under the Republicans(Eisenhower expanded Social Security, Nixon started the War on Drugs and started the DEA, Hoover started the ATF, Reagan expanded the DEA, and George W. Bush created the Department of Homeland Security and spent god knows how much on whatever pet projects ran across his senile brain).
