Brian Said:

can someone summarize the differences between the Republican and Democratic party?

We Answered:

Although many say that both parties share a similar American creed, they do have key differences. Note: This follows the assumption that Republicans (GOP) follow the conservative ideology, while Democrats (Dems) follow the liberal ideology. Also, there is a difference between liberalism, and libertarianism.

The Economy:

GOP: Believe the free market and laws of supply/demand should dictate economic policy. If the economy does require regulation, the government should focus on the supply side.

Dems: Believe the economy requires an "invisible hand", with regulation that protects against instability in the market. When regulation is required, the government should focus on the supply side.

Taxes:

GOP: Believe that over-taxation of the rich (producers) is hurtful to the economy and job creation.

Dems: Believe that taxation of those who have money is necessary to assist those who do not.

Responsibility:

GOP: Believe in "personal responsibility"

Dems: Believe in "social responsibility"

National Defense/Foreign Policy:

GOP: Believe safety of the US is paramount, and that the US should use any means necessary to protect itself.

Dems: Believe that negotiation and cooperation is paramount to foreign relations.

What are the differences between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party in terms of economic policy?

We Answered:

Republican economic policy calls for mainly three things: lower taxes (income, investment, and corporate), less regulation on business and industries, and less government spending. The theory behind these views are:

1. Lower taxes means tax-payers have more money to spend in their pockets and also more money to invest, meaning more revenue for business, which in turn, means more investment and employment.

2. Less regulation on business means companies stand the chance to expand and invest more to grow their company and to open up trade.

3. Less government spending means less government involvement, which follows the principles of "Lassez-Faire", meaning "let be". Less spending also means less money in the economy, which helps to curb inflation (general rise in the prices of goods and services.)

Democratic economic policy generally calls for more government spending and intervention. Democrats hold the general view of "economic fairness", whereby those in the lower classes of society have a more equal chance such as those in the higher classes.

Democrats usually call for:

1. Higher taxes on the highest income earners (usually the top 1%). They believe that through Republican economic policies, the tax burden falls on the middle class, so to ensure, as they see, "economic fairness", they call for a raise in taxes on the highest earners.

2. More government regulation on businesses to ensure "economic fairness" as they see it. This means that businesses are "equal" and have the same opportunities for growth and expansion.

3. More government spending to create jobs and improve societal needs such as social security, health care, education, and infrastructure (roads, bridges, etc.) The theory is that more employment will equal more consumer spending, will provide businesses with more revenue to hire workers which will keep the economy flowing and keep unemployment down. This theory is similar to the "Keynesian" style of Economics, which calls for more government intervention (spending) when needed to keep the economy stabilized.

What some all of the differences between the democratic party and the republican party?

We Answered:

The differences between Republicans and Democrats come down largely to money management and government responsibility.

The basic difference is that Republicans follow a conservative philosophy and Democrats follow a liberal philosophy.

A liberal would say that a proper role for government is to regulate and oversee the economy. Liberals say it's proper for government to ensure that companies do the right thing (such as pay minimum wages), and to ensure that people act responsibly in their finances (such as requiring contributions to retirement savings).

A conservative would say that a proper role for government is to regulate and oversee morality. Conservatives say it's proper for government to ensure that people are punished for immoral acts (such as taking drugs), and that people act appropriately in their marriages (such as banning homosexual marriage).

Republicans believe that you are able to decide what to do with your money. Democrats believe they know better so they take more of it and give to people that they think deserve it more than you. (Look up Socialism)
