No, it's very much the other way around. In general our Liberal Party is probably somewhere between the Republicans and Democrats, but closer to the Democrats, even though it is our more right wing party. The Labour Party is much further left/socialist than the Democrats are. Overall our politics are considerably more left wing than the US, particularly in the area of social policies more so than economic policy.

The current leader of the Liberal Party Tony Abbott is particularly conservative and deeply religious which is unusual in Australia, perhaps that's how your information came about.

Two things: Johnson in the 60s (especially the civil rights bill of 1964) and Reagan in the 80s.

Johnson broke the 'solid South' for the Democratic Party (he admitted that the civil rights legislation had "lost the South for a generation" for the Democrats), and Reagan, the consummate actor and self-made Cold Warrior, won it solidly for the Republicans. There were other factors involved, including demographic factors (the swelling population of the white South) and the growing political influence of white evangelical Christians.
