It was a retort in response to all of the sh*t people have been making up about McCain, as if to say 'beating his wife' is something else that would be thrown at him (as you can see people ARE doing right here, right now). McCain JOKES about it, but you people are SERIOUS about it. Who is worse?

The guy was baiting him, looking for a 'gotcha', just anything to try to make McCain look bad, so McCain played it the way the guy wanted to, and threw it back in his face.
