Yes, they are. The Republican Party used to be much more moderate before the 1980 presidential election. In those days, the party platform supported abortion rights but only marginally. Nowadays, the Republican Party is largely led by extremists who have driven out the more moderate members and those people have since become Independents or Democrats.

Aaron Burr. In that day, the Constitution allowed the person with the most electoral votes to become president (provided he had a majority). Whoever came in number two was vice president. Thus, Jefferson was vice president under Adams, even though they politically opposed each other by then.

However, Jefferson and Burr ran on a ticket, so each had exactly the same number of electoral votes. Burr took advantage of this to try to become president, and it took 36 ballots in the House of Representatives to decide the issue. Finally, Alexander Hamilton decided that, though he did not like Jefferson, he hated Burr, so Hamilton threw Federalist support to Jefferson, allowing him to be elected. Burr was outraged, and this was one of the incidents which drove Burr to kill Hamilton later in a duel.

In the wake of this difficulty, Congress passed, and the states ratified, the 12th amendment. Now, presidential and vice-presidential electors vote separately for each office.
