Are you really an anarchist or are you a socialist pseudo-anarchist? Anarchism does not mean the abolition of private property (quite the contrary). In an anarchist society, free competition is expanded to all areas (including defense and other "public goods") and there is no criminal gang monopolizing any part of the economy (or granting out monopolies to its friends, often in the name of "anti-monopoly" or "anti-trust"). In backward Somalia (home to a few illiterate Muslims), this system was successful and that country saw its living standards drastically increase over 15 years or so while living standards in neighboring countries were stagnant or declining. Somalia has been destabilized in the last few years thanks to the invasion by the UN (actually Ethiopia, but with support from many countries including the US) and the response of the local court businesses to form a cartel (the "Islamic Courts Union") to resist that invasion (and attack competition). Were anarchism (specifically free market anarchism) to break out in the US in the coming years (possibly after a complete loss of confidence in both Democrats and Republicans), I would expect it to be successful and to be the beginning of a world revolution.

The Democrats and Republicans are different in theory, but virtually identical in fact, due to the existence of a few "moderates" that control both parties, with the help of the media. Therefore, Republicans get elected and abandon their principles on economic issues, but Democrats get elected and abandon their principles on social issues and foreign policy, so significant policies never change, no matter who Americans elect.

I consider myself a conservative. As such I tend to lean Republican. The reverse would be true of a liberal. I will try to keep my ideology out of this but if it bleeds through I'm sure someone will call me on it.

Conservatives believe in:
Small Federal Government
States rights
Fiscal Responsibility
Individual rights
Traditional Values.

Republicans try to implement these values in a more or less successful way.

Liberals believe in
Large Federal Government
Less State Control
More social responsibility in Federal Government

And Democrats tend to implement these in the same more or less successful ways.
A Conservative is not necessarily religious but a religious person is more likely to be conservative. Same is true of liberals. A liberal is not necessarily a socialist but a socialist is likely a liberal. A true conservative would not support any federal social program, a true liberal would support almost any social program. No one is totally in either camp and range is distributed from far left to far right. Unfortunately the extremes have the loudest voice.

The ideals become more clear when you look at specific issues.
I believe in a woman's right to choose but I believe that Roe v Wade was wrong. Because I don't believe the federal government or the constitution addresses it. It is therefore left to the States. A liberal would believe in a women's right to choose but it should be handled at the federal level (ergo Roe v Wade is right).

I believe that an individual has the right to make choices in their personal life good or bad. A liberal would expect the government to insure that these choices are restricted for the greater good. An example would be that if I want an SUV I'd buy it. A liberal would restrict that choice (for the social good).

I would never support socialised medicine, a liberal would consider it a right.
