The US is still a republic.

Mostly, the constitution was a big compromise between those who favored rule by the rich and those who favored rule by the people.

I don't believe there were any real democracies upon which to model at the time. So the US was certainly an experiment.

Now, I certainly would have opted for a parliamentary democracy, but nobody ever listens to me anyway.

Because if government grows, there has to be more taxes on the population. Then the people don't have as much money to spend, lower standard of living, and less economic growth.

Perhaps you need to read a little document called the Declaration of Independence. Please note the word 'independence.' This implies, and in fact DECLARES, a break from the Mother Country. We no longer saw ourselves as British but as Americans desiring to govern ourselves due to outrageous taxes levied by The Crown to help pay for the Seven Years War in Europe. We were not represented, this pissed off a lot of folks and we said, 'enough is enough; time to break away!' Or words to that effect.

Someone has misled you or this is a VERY poorly worded question.
