Rand Paul has had a 15% lead over Grayson in the last two major polls, and Grayson is doing as much harm to himself as Rand Paul with his attack ads and techniques. They may end up hurting Paul in the general election (except the Dems are also hacking each other to bits, if with less publicity). However, I think he will win the election. Rand Paul is engaging, conservative, thoughtful and principled. Grayson I can't even describe except as the classic 'party team player' that brought us the bailouts and endless 'compromises' of our Constitution. Literally, listen to the debate tapes, or watch the Courier Journal taped interviews of them. Even the CJ said they couldn't tell what Grayson believed in.

I think the history is very interesting and you have put it together well, but if you are looking for parallels, then 1968 may be a better one, if Obama is denied the nomination provided he has won the popular vote.

Yes. As long as the neocon/extremist social conservatives dominate the party they will be rejected by most rational human beings. The R Party stood for fiscal conservatism and freedom. Now they stand for excessive burden for middle class taxpayers and anti-freedom.

They have abandoned rationality.
