Why do Neo-cons keep LYING about Martin Luther King being republican? We Answered:
I don't know whether or not what political party the man was registered as being a member of, but you should understand that until the late '60s and early '70s, the political parties were not what you think of them as now. Many of the segregationists were Democrats, and the Democratic party was the one that funneled government money to whites in the South. Republicans were actually the more liberal party, in terms of race, until that era came about. It should be noted that King did vote Republican in the 1956 presidential election, but even most King biographers say they don't know if he considered himself a member of a political party or an independent.
Unfortunately, the party has been taken over by religious zealots.
