I believe that when new parties are formed they are more response to the people for they are primarily birthed by the common people, but as the parties grow the get involved in the struggle for money and power. Political parties are influenced by political power and money, all parties. Just as charity organizations become corrupt as they become big and powerful why would not the political parties?

There is not a political party, or any organization that can solidly hold to their original principals. As Thomas Jefferson once said, "It is easier to climb up on the pedestal of morals, honor and principals, than it is to adhere to them."

If you get a room of fifty people your will get fifty opinions, when your are a politicians these opinions become your opinions if by supporting the opinions your are supported.

I do not think the core principals of the Republican party have changed, I think one compromise met another until 130 years later many can not remember what they originally were.
Every generation will find the world as they see it, and attempt to mold it to their perception.

Maybe what we witness today is a repeat of what befell the Whigs & Tories before their were the Democratics and Republicans?
