My son used to do the same thing. He had a really hard time with many people around. Even still at age 4 holidays and parties are hard for him, however he can vocalize it and knows its ok to take a break. When that happens we go to the basement or some other quiet place for as long as he needs. When he was a baby, we did the same thing which did help to some degree. He even did it as a baby. He would just get over-stimulated and need the break. Hopefully the evening with your mother since it is just one person and not so many. Try a few hours over at her place with just you, her and your kids to see how it goes before the theater day so you won't worry yourself so much on your birthday. I know how difficult it is. My son is the same way and its so hard and you do feel horrible but it isn't your fault. My son did this as well in addition to 2 hour long crying meltdowns for other reasons, like not getting a treat, having to share and you do feel bad, but you have to remember it isn't YOUR fault! They do grow out of it. At about age 3.5. Just stay consistent and work up to more people, take frequent breaks when they are in large groups and try to get breaks for yourself, you'll need it.

At Sams's club they have "cupcake cakes". They are in the shape of a cake, and decorated like a cake, but they're actually cupcakes. That would be cute for the cupcake theme. Walmart has really cute cakes too. As for food I would just do pizza, it's easy, you don't have to worry about keeping it hot or cold, and there is easy cleanup.

My daughter will be turning 1 in mid September, and I've been thinking about this a lot too. I'm pretty sure I'm going to ditch the whole "theme" idea and just go with pink and purple or some other colors. It can still be cute and memorable without the theme. She doesn't know what's gong on anyway. That should save me some money and I'll be able to spend it on food and decorations.

Keep it simple, its the easiest way. If people are likely to be coming and going I would suggest a cold buffet style like sausage rolls, quiches, sandwiches and small fancy cakes. Then have a themed birthday cake for the Jungle. As a joke you could also have the jelly bug style sweets as in "I'm a celebrity" .
