Boston Party Tea
Ruby Said:
What british economic policy caused the Boston Tea Party? We Answered:
The great tea conflict began when the British East India Company hiked its prices to accomodate tax levied by the crown. The result was the evolution of a thriving black market in tea in the colonies. Enterprising Americans began importing contraband tea from the Netherlands and selling it well below the price of British tea. Supposedly, some of the most revered American patriots were involved in this illicit but profitable trade. As more and more Americans refused to drink British tea, the East India Company faced a financial crisis. It became so overstocked with unsold tea, there was a seven-year supply sitting in warehouses in England.
To unload some of that stock and eliminate competition in the colonies, it was decided the company would slash its price below black market costs. But when shiploads of cheap British tea arrived in the colonies, Americans reacted in an unexpected way. Instead of being pleased, they were angry. Colonial tea-drinkers felt they were being manipulated by the British, but little did they realize, they were also being manipulated by the black marekteeers, who organised a series of "spontaneous" tea parties.
Nicole Said:
What are the reasons that the Revolutionary War and The Boston Tea Party happened? We Answered:
Essentially, Parliament and King George wanted us to cover some of the debt from the French and Indian War, and so they laid taxes on Americans. Our problem with that was that we had no elected representative serving in Parliament to voice our best interests, hence "No taxation without representation." There are many more reasons than this of course, but to cover it all in this post would... Well, just pay attention in class and read on your own time. The Boston Tea Party happened as a culmination of the Townshend Acts of 1767 and the Tea Act of 1773. The Townshend Acts initially placed a new tax on imported items: paper, paint, lead, glass, and tea. Eventually, due to protests it was repealed in part, leaving only the tax on tea in place. Then Parliament passed the Tea Act, which provided a perfect monopoly on tea to the (failing) East India Company, in an attempt to prop it up. The "Patriot" Americans were of the opinion that to consume this tea would be to validate the authority of Parliament, despite the reduced price that tea would be provided at.
So we tossed their tea overboard in Boston Harbor, encouraged the consumption of either smuggled tea or coffee, and haven't looked back since.
Of course, the Boston Port Act came next. Kind of painful, that...
Anyway, I encourage to read more on the subject! It's very interesting, and although I gave you a few paragraphs, it's up to you to do more research to fill out the rest of the project! Good luck!
