Boston Tea Party Summary

Deanna Said:

What was the Boston Tea Party?

We Answered:

The Boston Tea Party was a direct action by colonists in Boston, a town in the British colony of Massachusetts, against the British government. On December 16, 1773, after officials in Boston refused to return three shiploads of taxed tea to Britain, a group of colonists boarded the ships and destroyed the tea by throwing it into Boston Harbor. The incident remains an iconic event of American history, and reference is often made to it in other political protests.

Why are these events important?

We Answered:

I can help with some of the significances, but don't expect people are going to do your homework for you.

1. The French and Indian War was significant because the debt it gave to Great Britain caused the king to tax the colonies, thus leading to taxation w/o representation and rebellion.

2. The Boston Tea Party was an act of rebellion against the king of Britain that expressed the colonists' resentment. This angered the king and led to further law acts.

3. The Boston Massacre was probably important because it gave colonists (especially leaders) yet another reason to resent the king and eventually push for independence.

4. Sugar Act was significant because the merchant colonists thought it would reduce their profits and that would be upsetting.

5. Stamp Act significance comes to show taxation w/o representation. Colonists are angry that they have no say.

6. Wilmot Proviso

7. Compromise of 1850 was a way to satisfy both the North and South. It never solved the slavery issue, nor kept the peace for long.

8. Kansas Nebraska Act caused greater conflict to arise between the North and South. Repealing the Missouri Compromise for popular sovereignty was a mess--"Bleeding Kansas."

9. collapse of Whig Party, republican party formed

10. Doctrine of popular sovereignty

Now, decide for yourself the most and least important events.
